Musicien jouant de deux handpans à la maison

432 Hz or 440 Hz: what difference does it make for a handpan?

On our product pages, you choose the tuning: 440 Hz or 432 Hz. Here is what it changes, without jargon.

What these numbers mean

The number of hertz gives the reference frequency of the note A (A4). At 440 Hz, the A vibrates 440 times per second: this is the international standard, used by almost all modern instruments. At 432 Hz, every note is tuned very slightly lower, by about a third of a semitone.

What changes to the ear

Played on its own, the difference is subtle: 432 Hz sounds slightly lower and, to some people, softer. You sometimes read that 432 Hz has special effects on body or mind: no serious study has shown this. So choose with your ears.

How to choose?

  • You want to play with other musicians (guitar, piano, accompanied singing): take 440 Hz, you will be in tune with them.
  • You mostly play alone, to relax or meditate: both work, it's a matter of taste.

At Galet, both tunings are the same price.
